Leadership Primers

Beginning in Fall, 2021, CPCIL is piloting three Leadership Primers to support the parks and protected areas community. Explore crucial topics affecting parks and protected areas in Canada through self-directed activities, case studies and readings/videos, and dialogue with other participants.

Leadership Primers are available at no cost.

It is anticipated that these self-directed online programs will take twelve hours to complete. Current primers will be available until April 30, 2022 and can be completed at your own pace.

Parks, Representation,
and Black History

Created by Jacqueline L. Scott - Black Outdoors

Explore diversity, equity and inclusion in Canadian parks by focusing on Black people as they are the least likely to visit nature places, including national and provincial parks. The goal is to explore ways of making parks more welcoming for Black Canadians, and by extension other people of colour.

Collaborative
Leadership for Innovation

Created by Sylvie Plante
Royal Roads University

Explore how social capital and boundary spanning can support collaboration and innovation in parks and protected areas. The goal is to understand the value of relationships and the importance of actively nurturing them.

Research and Knowledge
for New Park Decision-Makers

Created by Dr. Charlotte Gorley
Royal Roads University

The purpose of this primer is to provide a basis for understanding the role of research in park management and the importance of applying evidence to decisions regarding park management. This primer is intended to be a resource for decision-makers, politicians, journalists, and others who want to be more informed about research and the importance of incorporating research evidence into decision-making for park management.

Upcoming Program Themes

The Canadian Parks Collective for Innovation and Leadership plans to develop two to three new primers each year. Topics we are currently developing include:

  • Ethical Space for Parks and Protected Areas Leaders
  • Financial Sustainability in Conservation
  • Conservation Mental Health
  • Asset Management
  • Connectivity

If you have a suggestion for a primer topic or would like to collaborate on one of the primers listed above, contact CPCIL.
