About this event

Everyone is welcome to join this Pay-What-You-Can class. We suggest a donation of £15, however we understand that may not be possible for everybody. Please be honest and pay what you can afford so that we may continue to offer our sessions on a donation basis.

Join London Drawing Group as we step inside the magical world of BOTANY for our newest class, time time dedicated to the incredible work of EMILY CARR!

This class is dedicated to the life and work of the fascinating Emily Carr; a Canadian Artist and Writer whose work and travels engrossed her in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest.

A Canadian Icon, Carr’s sweeping, eerie landscapes and loose, gestural brushstrokes evoke a sense of ominous, beautiful wilderness. Often disappearing into the forests for weeks at a time, Carr’s landscapes offer a unique insight into a changing landscape and the people who inhabited it.

As well as being deeply influenced by the architecture and art practices of the Indigenous Peoples of the Northwest Pacific Coast, Carr also studied in Paris at a time when colour was being revolutionised in western painting, and was inspired by some of the greatest names of the time; Matisse, Derrain, and the Impressionists.

This session will explore Carr’s life, work and the shifting perceptions of her complex legacy through a short lecture, then students will be guided through a series of Carr inspired exercises in Pen and Ink!

Ink can be a tricky and transformative medium, sitting in a grey space between painting and drawing, our tutor Luisa will be offering some hints, tricks and useful techniques that will explore both sides of the medium, so you’ll need some ink, pens and brushes too! Please see the materials list below and come prepared!

MATERIALS

PAPER (A nice thick paper, watercolour or a good cartridge)

INK (Luisa will be using a mixture of inks, but any drawing ink will do, if you can source a variety of colours then do so, but you will definitely need a black drawing ink, Indian Ink is a particular favourite of Luisa’s)

BRUSHES (a variety of thick and thin brushes is essential)

DIP PEN – this one is vital for getting the full sense of how ink functions as a medium – you can source one online or at any art shop. If you really can’t find one you can also use ink and brushes with a fineliner or biro for details.
