Coastal Connections-A Speaker Series on the Quoddy Region
Coastal Connections is a speaker series highlighting different coastal and marine areas of New Brunswick. This fall and winter we will be highlighting the Quoddy Region, an incredible place in need of protection. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from speakers sharing about different aspects of the Quoddy Region and ask questions.
Our last event is taking place January 13th at 7pm AST. Dr. Claire Goodwin of the Huntsman Marine Science Centre will be giving a talk titled ‘Diving Back in Time-Underwater Changes in the Quoddy Region over 40 years’ all about the Huntsman’s team of SCUBA divers that surveyed subtidal sites in the Western Isles, Bay of Fundy. Many of these sites were last surveyed over 40 years ago, by Art MacKay and associates, for the ‘Bay of Fundy Research Inventory.’
Come and find out about the project and their discoveries – including sponge species new to science.
Dr. Claire Goodwin is a Research Scientist at the Huntsman Marine Science Centre and Curator of the Atlantic Reference Centre Museum. She studies the marine biodiversity of Canada and many other areas, including Europe, the Arctic, and the Antarctic. Much of her research has involved scientific diving to collect specimens and survey habitats. Her warmest dive was in 28°C water, the coldest -1.8°C! She specializes in sponges and has described 82 sponge species new to science.
