Explore an Innovative Design and Build Challenge: Create a Bee House (to teach gr. 4-9)

Investigate the problem of habitat loss for local pollinators by learning how to support students in solving the problem through designing and building a house for solitary bees using simple materials. Discover how students can create an algorithm to share their step-by-step instructions for building a bee house with others.

Learning outcomes:

  • Apply the elements of design and build to contextual problem solving.
  • Support students in the design of a bee house that meets the needs of solitary bees.

Hello! My name is Jenna Southen. I originally come from Red Deer, Alberta, though I’ve found myself travelling across Canada and living in some wonderful places! I graduated from the University of Alberta in 2014, with my Bachelors of Education, and received my Masters of Professional Education in Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice in 2021. My first experience as a teacher was as a generalist teacher in Kimmirut, Nunavut, and then as a high school teacher in the same community. Following my experiences there, I moved to Ontario where I currently hold the role of intermediate STEM teacher at a school on Chippewas of the Thames First Nation.
