Columbia Outdoor School is a non-profit, charitable organization that focuses on providing outdoor education opportunities. The Society provides community outreach and operates a year-round outdoor and environmental education centre (Blue Lake Camp) located 26 km West of Canal Flats, BC plus an office location in Cranbrook, BC. Blue Lake Camp offers youth, teen and family camp experiences as well as education programs for schools, private groups and youth organizations. Blue Lake Camp facilities are available year-round for vacation rentals, reunions, conferences, weddings, and other events.

The position Camp Counsellor will report directly to the Team Leads and Camp Director. The Camp Counsellors will live on site, supervising a cabin of youth aged 6-14 room and board is provided at no extra charge during camp programs.

Position Title: Eco. / Education Camp Counsellor

Location: Blue Lake Camp, Canal Flats BC

Terms:       Full-Time – Seasonal Contract
Salary: $121.60 -$160.00 Per Day, plus 4% vacation pay based on experience and certification

Term: June 26th, 2022 – August 22nd, 2022 (Summer Season)

There will be some virtual training sessions March through June in addition. *Potential to carry on into fall programming*

Nature and Scope:

Counsellors are the primary caregivers for each camper. The Counsellor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. We are hiring several Camp Counsellors who will have shared responsibilities, but will have one area they specialize in. The four areas of focus are: Eco./ Education, Rec./ Outdoor Skills, Teen/ Leadership, and Special Needs/ Inclusion. The successful applicant will be proficient in leading all areas but will specialize and focus their skills on one.

Essential Job Functions:

  Apply HIGH FIVE principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
  Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their living unit, within activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
  Assure campers are properly supervised at all times.
  Be aware of and implement safety guidelines. Participate in the development and implementation

of program activities for campers within the mission and outcomes.
  Responsible for leading and assisting with the teaching of activities.
  Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.

Provide for the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
  Assist in program areas such as waterfront, nature, all camp activities, and arts and crafts as directed.
  Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
  Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
  Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by the Camp Director.
  Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems and discuss with camp director when appropriate.
  Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to camp director.
  Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
  Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
  Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.

Other Job Duties:
  Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.
  Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning, and leading those as assigned.
  Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  Assist in the planning of special events.
  Identify other tasks or duties that this position may be expected to perform but are not necessarily the primary focus of this position.

Inclusion/ Special Needs Focus:
  Provide 1:1 support for campers with special needs.
  This is not a nursing, care aid, or PSW role. If campers require physical support, they will attend camp with a qualified worker they will be responsible for providing.
  Adapt programs on the fly so that all the campers are able to play together.
  Develop goals with the camper and parent for the week.

Equipment Used:

Counsellors may be asked to use washers and dryers, gardening equipment, cleaning solutions and specialty program equipment. Some may be asked to drive camp vehicles with associated license.

Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)

  Must be a minimum of 16 years of age to apply for a paid position by July 1st, 2022
  Must be a minimum of 15 years of age to apply for a volunteer position by July 1st, 2022
  Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR by June 24th, 2022
  Must be able to provide proof of current Covid-19 Vaccination status. Must be fully vaccinated to week prior to start date.
  Ability to interact with all age levels.
  Previous experience working with youth with special needs.
  Paid staff must be available to attend all staff training and following seven weeks of camp.
  Volunteer staff must be available for all of staff training and two weeks of camp.
  Obtain HIGH FIVE Principals of Healthy Childhood Development Certification
  Provide a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check prior to start date (18+)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Understand the development needs of youth.
  Previous experience working with youth who have special needs.
  Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.
  Demonstrate knowledge and skill in designated camp program areas.
  Specialized certifications in other camp focus areas such as National Lifeguard, OFA 3, Wilderness First

Aid, Food Safe, Class 4 or 5 driver’s license, Challenge Course Facilitator, are considered assets but not requirements.

Physical Aspects of the Job:
  Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

  Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

Some physical requirements of a Camp Counsellor position are endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.; willing to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited access to Wi-Fi, no cell service, and simple equipment and facilities; and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, bears, bats, etc.

Summer Camp Counsellors will work Sundays through Fridays. You can expect long workdays, with programs beginning around 7:00 AM and ending after 10:00 PM and wake ups throughout the night from campers.
