This position can work out of a Vancouver office or may choose to work remotely elsewhere in British Columbia. Currently, the majority of our team is choosing to work from home. 1-2 in-person, all-staff retreats are scheduled per year. The successful candidate will travel to Victoria and/or Lower Mainland as needed for internal and stakeholder meetings.

The annual salary for the position is $85,000, plus generous health and dental benefits, RRSP matching program, 15 days paid vacation, and scheduled annual cost of living increases.

The newly created role of Director of Conservation & Advocacy is a senior leader within CPAWS-BC responsible for the oversight and implementation of conservation campaigns and advocacy. They will provide leadership in developing and enacting campaign strategy, developing effective government relations and advocacy plans, oversee stakeholder relations and coalition-building strategies in order to work towards conservation goals.

The Director of Conservation and Advocacy has overall responsibility for:

• Working with conservation staff to develop strategic campaign and advocacy plans that drive success on
CPAWS-BC’s Impact Measures.

• Overseeing the development and leading the implementation of a strategy specific to Indigenous relations within
conservation campaign and advocacy initiatives (e.g., reconciliation, decolonization, and/or Indigenization of
partnership relations, funding, and governance models, and/or staff competencies)

• Hiring, directing, and managing the conservation team to ensure a coordinated approach and strategy to
CPAWS-BC’s work to achieve new public protected areas in BC, ensure the proper management of established
protected areas, and defend other ecologically significant areas from harm.

• Collaborating with the Executive Director and the Development team on the funding, budget, and governance
support required for conservation work.

• Liaising between the conservation staff and the Board of Directors and providing guidance to the Board on
conservation and strategic decisions (e.g., impact measures)

• Facilitating all government relations related to CPAWS-BC’s conservation program and campaign areas,
including lobbying activities, and preparation of policy papers and briefs.

• A strategic and creative approach, being detail-oriented, highly motivated, diplomatic and tactful, with excellent
judgment and demonstrated problem-solving skills, with the ability to make decisions in a changing environment
and anticipate future needs.

• An encouraging and supportive leadership style which aims to bring out the best in people and aligns them around
bold goals.

• Demonstrated ability in identifying innovative solutions and opportunities, taking risks, and implementing
goal-oriented strategies.

• A passion for protecting Canada’s lands, ocean, wildlife, and species at risk.

• Progressive experience leading multidisciplinary teams in the conservation non-profit sector and/or government
and working effectively across the organization and functions

• Expertise in program development and managing campaigns and a proven track record in government relations.

• Demonstrated experience in effective communications and community engagement strategies to galvanize public
opinion and buy-in, and affect change within regional, provincial, and/or federal policy and public opinion

• Strong understanding of and commitment to JEDI principles (justice, equity, diversity & inclusion), including and
specifically in reconciliation, decolonization, and/or Indigenizing relationships
