DUC in Williams Lake is seeking four Conservation Technicians to assist with the development and management of wetland habitats throughout the Central Interior region of BC. This position will provide an excellent opportunity to learn about and work in the field of Conservation and Resource Management.

Duties & Responsibilities

Field Operation and Management of Wetland Conservation Projects

  1. Assist with daily operations, maintenance and inspections of dams and water control structures.
  2. Perform maintenance activities on projects such as:installing signs, vegetation control, invasive species removal, repairing fencing, clearing trails, and removing beaver debris.
  3. Data recording of activities and changes on wetland conservation projects.
  4. Perform construction tasks on project rebuild sites.
  5. Habitat Inventory and Waterfowl Census
  6. Conduct waterfowl surveys on DUC wetland projects
  7. Prepare sites for and participate in amphibian salvages prior to wetland construction activities.
  8. Assist with ongoing habitat restoration projects.
  9. Collect biological samples and other data for carbon storage analyses
  10. Administration of Wetland Conservation Projects
  11. Assist with wetland file management, photographic databases, and cataloging images.
  12. Prepare report materials.
  13. Record biological survey data and enter data in a digital database.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a career in agriculture, engineering technology, biology, plant ecology, environmental science or resource management.
  • Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at start of employment.
  • A valid current driver’s license and a current driver’s abstract.
  • Knowledge of basic biology, local species, and ecosystems; GPS-based technologies; survey techniques; Microsoft suite programs; ArcGIS an asset.
  • Ability to work in a team as well as independently.
  • Comfortable operating field equipment (provided by DUC) including: 4WD pickup trucks, ATVs, tools (brush cutters, chain saws, etc.), chest waders, binoculars and cameras as required.
  • Experience working outdoors, conducting biological surveys, removing wooded vegetation, and working construction an asset.
  • Ability to live in Williams Lake BC and work away for days at a time in company provided accommodation. Working longer days and weekends will be periodically required.
  • These positions involve physical work, heavy lifting, and outdoor work in adverse weather conditions.
  • The successful candidate will be required to submit proof of COVID-19 Vaccination

Additional Details
Pay: $20 per hour, 35-hour workweeks (plus 4% vacation pay).
2 positions: Anticipated start date May 2, 2022. Anticipated end date August 19, 2022.
2 positions: Anticipated start date June 6, 2022. Anticipated end date September 23, 2022.
