Reporting to the Manager, Parks Planning and Establishment, working with The Parks & Special Places Division, is the lead Territorial agency responsible for the protection of natural and cultural heritage landscapes and recreation opportunities in Nunavut.  The Division contributes to the conservation and sustainable management of natural and cultural heritage through land use planning, development review, community engagement programs and policy development while recognizing the importance for conservation, recreation, tourism, economic development and heritage appreciation and ensuring these benefits are maximized for Inuit.

The Regional Coordinator Park Planning & Operations will organize, conduct and consolidate research to plan and manage parks and special places; Coordinates the Capital Planning Program and manages its implementation; Coordinates Regional operations of Nunavut Parks and Special Places; Supports the Manager and Division with development and implementation of programs.  Travel is required throughout the Territory.

An in-depth knowledge and appreciation of Nunavut’s economic, social, cultural and political, in relation to parks, tourism and the Nunavut Agreement is beneficial to be successful in this position. The incumbent must be able to take the lead with project management to initiate, manage, lead and complete projects.  Proficiency in software products such as word processing, spreadsheets and communications.  The ability to possess a valid Firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) and Wilderness First Aid certificate.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are obtained through an Undergraduate Degree in landscape architecture, environmental planning and design, environmental studies or geography, with a minimum of two (2) years’ experience coordinating and organizing one or more natural resource management or environmental planning agencies including park management planning and related tourism initiatives in individual and committee settings.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French.

Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official language is an asset.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Community awareness, fluency in Inuktitut, knowledge of environmental characteristics of the Nunavut Settlement Area, relevant northern experience and knowledge of the Inuit Impacts and Benefits Agreement (IIBA) and Nunavut Agreement (NA) will be considered assets.

Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
