The North Coast Cetacean Research Initiative (NCCRI) is a program of the Ocean Wise Conservation Association based in Prince Rupert aimed at better understanding cetacean (whale & dolphin) populations around the North Coast and Haida Gwaii.  Central to this work is supporting and encouraging participation in our flagship citizen science program, the BC Cetacean Sightings Network (BCCSN).

The Haida Gwaii outreach and citizen science coordinator will support the efforts of the NCCRI and the BCCSN by: encouraging and responding to cetacean sightings reports, planning and undertaking outreach events, holding workshops for key marine user groups, and collecting data on humpback whales and occurrence of marine mammal incidents such as depredation.

Please note the following important information:
This position is located on Haida Gwaii, working remote
This is a part-time position until October 2022 with flexibility (approx. 22 hours/week)
Candidates resident of Haida Gwaii preferred (but not required)



Support increased participation in the BCCSN and WhaleReport Alert System:
Participate in community outreach to increase the profile of the BC Cetacean Sightings Network and garner new observers;
Develop and deliver training workshops on species ID and data collection for key marine groups to solicit more sightings reports;
Establish a Haida Gwaii-specific working group for the WhaleReport Alert System for professional mariners in the area;
Respond to and enter cetacean sightings data.

Build public awareness of cetaceans and support marine conservation around Haida Gwaii:
Conduct mariner outreach and education by coordinating marina visits at marinas;
Provide information about cetacean stewardship (e.g. safe vessel operation around cetaceans, reporting incidents etc) through outreach activities;
Conduct outreach to youth on marine mammals and marine conservation by working with local schools and organizations targeting young people;

Develop and maintain professional links and collaborations with conservation groups, government agencies, Council of the Haida Nation, ecotourism companies, and commercial and sport fishermen;

Support the Marine Mammal Research Program’s social media presence by creating content, posts and blogs

Act as a node for cetacean research and stewardship on Haida Gwaii:
Build relationships with key marine users and conservation on Haida Gwaii;

Develop Haida Gwaii-specific outreach materials such as brochures, posters, ID guides;

Provide a local resource on cetacean biology and stewardship;

Begin to solicit identification photos of humpback whales to contribute to a local catalogue and coast-wide monitoring efforts.

Collect information about marine mammal incidents such as strandings, entanglement, and depredation.


Education and Experience
A post-secondary degree in biology, natural sciences, environmental studies, marine science or a related field;
Experience delivering educational programs or talks;
Some experience with databases an asset;
Experience on boats an asset;
Valid BC driver’s license required.

Strong organizational skills;
Some knowledge of marine mammal biology and marine ecology;
Outgoing, energetic and comfortable with public speaking and engaging the public;
Self-motivated and able to work well independently and under minimal supervision;
Ability to learn and adapt in a constantly changing environment;
Resourceful, a problem-solver, skilled in meeting priorities and able to adapt to unexpected situations;
Ability and maturity to deal with a wide variety of ages and personalities.


Working Conditions
Working independently;
During outreach events, candidate will be exposed to seasonal weather, noise and crowds;
Candidate must own or have access to a vehicle for work-related travel (mileage and gas compensated);
Candidate must be able to travel with the region, sometimes overnight, and work evenings and weekends on occasion;
Residency in Haida Gwaii a strong asset.
