Ultimately reporting to the Director of Fisheries and Seafood, with daily oversight from the Science Lead, Fisheries and Seafood Initiative, the Science Analyst is responsible for conducting research on the sustainability performance of various fisheries and aquaculture-methods of production in service of the Fisheries and Seafood Initiative. This position is also responsible for maintaining the seafood recommendations database. From time to time, this position will liaise with other NGOs or business partners on seafood assessments (both farmed and wild) and will act in a critical support role for the Ocean Wise Fisheries and Seafood science team overall.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Planning & Development

Providing input to the Science Lead on the overall Fisheries and Seafood Initiative strategic plan;
Ensuring the delivery of key responsibilities as outlined in their individual workplan to ensure the objectives of the program are met in a timely and effective manner;
Actively participating in employee goal-setting and performance review protocols as required by the organization.
Public & Stakeholder Engagement

Assisting Partner Relations colleagues in crafting materials for external audiences including business partners, the public or other departments within Ocean Wise;
Working with the team to ensure effective science communication of complicated sustainable seafood topics through a variety of mediums including blogs, short videos, newsletters, recommendation updates and more.
Operations and Monitoring

Maintaining our database of seafood recommendations and ensuring continuity and accuracy of data contained within;
Providing training and support to other Ocean Wise Seafood employees on the science of seafood recommendations;
Working in a team environment with OWS employees to strengthen the scientific rigor of the program, gather new information, and reach consensus on seafood recommendations;
Assisting with document creation, report writing, active research, presentations, and support material, as requested and required;
Engaging with marine scientists, fisheries scientists, industry experts and other NGO’s working within the Monterey Bay Aquarium assessment model, and non-governmental organizations to collect fisheries and aquaculture data;
Creating content for, and assisting with, website maintenance;
Other duties as required.

A successful candidate will demonstrate the following skills and experience:

Education and Experience

Master’s degree in Fisheries or Aquaculture Science, or equivalent diploma/certificate;
2 + years of experience in the seafood supply chain a significant asset;
Proven excellence in conducting independent and collaborative research;
Experience writing Seafood Watch fisheries or aquaculture assessments a significant asset;
Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous and/or First Nations partners and communities strongly desired;
Demonstrated experience with small-scale fisheries or salmon an asset;
A strong understanding of emerging issues in marine conservation is critical.
Technical Competencies

Expert knowledge of fisheries and aquaculture including methods of production, global trends, research, and industry activity;
Computer programming skills (ability to code);
Proven research experience (published research a plus);
Effective at analyzing qualitative and quantitative data;
Positive and persuasive communication skills (verbal/written);
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and also in a team environment;
Ability to multi-task with keen attention to detail;
Knowledge, comfort, and proficiency in working with Microsoft Office Suite, Salesforce, and other software;
Strong PC skills are necessary as the incumbent uses a PC for a variety of operational, service management, and related activities;
WORKING CONDITIONS

The incumbent will work remotely for the foreseeable future;
The position is primarily non-physical in nature however incumbent must be able to safely move and lift boxes up to 20-30 lbs;
Work is conducted via video meetings, phone, meeting with fellow employees daily, traveling to business partner facilities from time to time, and reviewing a significant amount of written or computer-based documentation;
Concentration is required while working on computers and verifying the accuracy of documents and reports; there are possible interruptions and unpredictable deadlines and time constraints requiring urgent decisions to be made;
Occasional flexibility and availability in the schedule are required during the week, including working weekends;
The role may require some driving.
