This Seasonal Student position will assist with the development of strategic community partnerships that enable citizens and user groups to develop community programs, projects and events. Areas of focus include recreation/sport, beautification, events and initiatives in the Parks and Roads Services Branch of the Public Works Department, from May 2022 to August 2022. This position is within the CUPE 1505 Bargaining Unit and is located in the community of Fort McMurray, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s urban center.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Researches and designs special events, programs and projects to encourage active participation in recreation/sport, beautification, events and initiatives that enhance the quality of life.
  • Analyzes resources and goals for community programming with user groups and provides solutions and recommendations.
  • Develops and/or evaluates plans, reports and strategies to ensure community needs are met to optimize service levels and encourage community pride and ownership.
  • Plans and develops advertisement and promotional campaigns for programs and events relative to these programs.
  • Researches and accesses grants, gifts-in-kind, and corporate sponsorship for cost containment.
  • Proactively seeks opportunities to create positive customer service experiences, assist members of the public and provide excellent customer service.
  • Manages all required work related to branch events, programs, and projects within the approved budget.
  • Manages events and programs as required in areas where pre-identified community gaps exist and coordinate a variety of volunteer-related programs and services.
  • Coordinates all internal resources on behalf of community organizations hosting events and activities in the region.
  • Assesses programs and projects to ensure that municipal workplace safety policies and procedures are in place and are followed.
  • Ensures the use of community development principles in project implementation.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Proven planning, programming, leadership and team-leading skills.
  • High degree of interpersonal, communication, and group process skills.
  • Sound project and time management skills are required to effectively and efficiently manage multiple projects, events, and programs.
  • Proficient in various computer programs (MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Preference will be given to students enrolled in post-secondary Recreation/Sport
  • Administration, Community Development or related programs.
  • Project Management courses and certifications are considered assets.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR-C certification is an asset.
  • Candidates who are successful during the interview process will be required to provide the following documents:
    • Proof of full-time post-secondary enrollment for the Winter 2022 and Fall 2022 semesters.
    • A copy of a High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
    • Contact information for two supervisory references.
    • A copy of a valid Class Five (5) Driver’s Licence and a Driver’s Abstract (issued within 30 days).

These documents are not required at the time of application or at the time of the interview, however, preparing and collecting these documents in advance will expedite the recruitment process for successful candidates.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

  • A valid Class Five (5) Operator’s Licence is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.
  • Must be willing to work outside in all conditions.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform the job on an ongoing basis.
  • Criminal Record with Vulnerable Sector Check for review and acceptance is required.
